In the beginning of this month I was hired to photograph Darren and Kari. I was SO honored when they had asked me because they are both such incredible artists within different mediums.
The day began very peaceful and chill as they prepared for the day together [I love this so much]. They assisted each other at the GRAM, and made the morning simply about each other. We started all of our pre-wedding details and portraits at 9 am in preparation for their early ceremony. I got to shoot film images and digital images and it was everything I had hoped for.
Right before the ceremony, Darren was sitting next to Kari’s dad. I overheard a conversation – that simply just wrapped me in a hug and reminded me why I love this job so much. Darren said, “I have never questioned if Kari was the one for me. I have even questioned my career as a musician, but this is the one thing that I have always known for sure.”
The world feels chaotic sometimes [most of the time]. We have a lot of news hitting us in one moment. There are a lot of sad things we are exposed to… but days like this give me a moment to really embrace love, embrace community, and represent it all in art.
I love looking at the difference between film and digital representations. It truly is so fun. I asked Kari and Darren what type of film stock they wanted. When people hire me for film I have a plethora of film they can choose from. They said, “we can choose something a bit more out there and creative like a 800asa film stock,” and this exploded my heart. Not every film stock is the same. They all have different color balances and purposes. 800ASA makes things a bit more grainy compared to a 125 or 400 – but it also makes it that much cooler.
